PRECAUTIONS
Cefalexin
BEFORE THERAPY WITH CEPHALEXIN IS
INSTITUTED, CAREFUL INQUIRY SHOULD BE MADE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE PATIENT
HAS HAD PREVIOUS HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS TO CEPHALEXIN, CEPHALOSPORINS,
PENICILLINS, OR OTHER DRUGS. IF THIS PRODUCT IS TO BE GIVEN TO
PENICILLIN-SENSITIVE PATIENTS, CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED BECAUSE
CROSS-HYPERSENSITIVITY AMONG BETA-LACTAM ANTIBIOTICS HAS BEEN CLEARLY
DOCUMENTED AND MAY OCCUR IN UP TO 10% OF PATIENTS WITH A HISTORY OF
PENICILLIN ALLERGY. IF AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO CEPHALEXIN OCCURS,
DISCONTINUE THE DRUG. SERIOUS ACUTE HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS MAY REQUIRE
TREATMENT WITH EPINEPHRINE AND OTHER EMERGENCY MEASURES, INCLUDING OXYGEN,
INTRAVENOUS FLUIDS, INTRAVENOUS ANTIHISTAMINES, CORTICOSTEROIDS, PRESSOR
AMINES AND AIRWAY MANAGEMENT, AS CLINICALLY INDICATED.
Before taking cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic
to it; or to penicillins or other cephalosporins (e.g., cefpodoxime); or if
you have any other allergies.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical
history, especially of: kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (e.g.,
colitis).
This drug may make you dizzy. Use caution while driving, using machinery, or
doing any activity that requires alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages.
The liquid form of this product may contain sugar. Caution is advised if you
have diabetes. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product
safely.
Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by
the kidneys. Therefore, older adults may be at greater risk for side effects
while using this drug.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
